The Stable is at the corner of Cherokee and Lemp in the old Lemp Brewery. They have an incredible beer selection and very good food and atmosphere, despite being extremely loud and popular. Maggie O’Brien’s is on Market Street just west of Union Station. It’s popular too, but we haven’t been there.
There are many places to walk around and see beautiful old (late 19th century+) homes in St. Louis. One is the Lafayette Park neighborhood, between Park and Lafayette streets, east of Jefferson. There is a wine bar, brewery, chocolate bar, yoga studio, antique shops, several good restaurants, and a coffee shop all bordering the park. Another neighborhood we love is Soulard, home to the Soulard Farmers’ Market. Take Broadway south until you see the market, then take a right on Geyer or Allen. Soulard’s bars are all good; the Shanti, Llewelyn’s, and Hammerstone’s are popular. Try Joanie’s for a taste of good St. Louis style pizza; skip Fat Toney’s barbecue. The Cherokee Antiques Row, which has coffee and sandwich shops too, is on Cherokee between Jefferson and Lemp. Take Jefferson south of our house and turn left on Cherokee. Finally, if you are touring Forest Park, Lindell Avenue along the northern border of the park has incredibly fancy homes that are all different.
More places to eat: Italian Food!
The Hill is an Italian-American neighborhood that rivals those in any major city. Every business is Italian and the restaurants are great. Gian-Tony’s (at Daggett and Macklind) and Lorenzo’s (one block east at Daggett and Edwards) are two of our favorites, with <$20 entrees that will knock your socks off. Joe Fassi sausage company (2323 Sublette) and Gioia’s Deli (also at Daggett and Macklind) are super for lunch. The Missouri Baking Company is a wonderful traditional Italian-American bakery (Edwards and Wilson). Milo’s Bocce Garden is a fun bar and bocce garden at Wilson and Marconi.

Nightlife
St. Louis is a place that was built on a good tavern. In the late nineteenth century over 100 breweries were in the city. These German immigrants built most of the houses in the area Laura and I live today. There was a time where you actually voted at your corner bar. Here is a list of a couple of our favorites:
Broadway Oyster Bar- It is more of a patio than a bar, but a great place to soak up the June sun, listen to music, and do quality control on some Budweiser product. Many New Orleans acts come in the summer.
BB Jazz Blues & Soups- The name says it all. The best blues bar in St. Louis. Never seen a bad show here.
Venice Cafe- A 21 year work in the making. This bar is a literal piece of art. The upstairs bathroom won the best bathroom in St Louis. Everything is done in Mosaic with the most interesting of mediums. The patio is a favorite and inside has the feel of a house party. One note it is only a cash bar with available ATM. Located in historic Benton Park blocks away from Budweiser and the old Lemp Brewery. Music with a standard five dollar cover.
Frazier's Brown Bag- Just on the other side of the Venice is Frazier's. A bit more upscale than the Venice, but still in the funky vein. Go grab a cocktail, glass of wine, light dinner or an appetizer. There is a good DJ, Zachary, on Friday nights till about 11 spinning funky jazz, and interesting jazz. After a few cocktails, venture over to the Venice for a extended evening.

Jefferson Memorial and the Gateway Arch are very special to our city. Check out the free Lewis and Clark exhibit underneath the Arch- great for kids and history buffs- and don’t miss the historic courthouse where Dred and Harriet Scot fought for their freedom. The one-hour riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River is narrated by a park ranger and provides a great view of the city and its history. http://www.gatewayarch.com/Arch/info/act.aspx
Tower Grove Park is a beautiful place to walk, with a paved path around its perimeter, gorgeous 19th century Victorian pavilions and sculptures, and more than 8,000 trees and shrubs from around the world. http://www.towergrovepark.org/
Imo’s Pizza is a St. Louis favorite! Cracker thin crust and Provel cheese (a combination of swiss, cheddar, and provolone) provide a unique late night snack. Many Imo’s locations are open until 2 a.m.

The Saint Louis Zoo in Forest Park is a great place for kids (http://www.stlzoo.org/). Entrance is free, but parking costs $10- free street parking is available for a short trek. Do not miss the penguins! Hours are 9-5 daily.
The City Museum (http://www.citymuseum.org/allattractions.html) is a must for fun loving kids of all ages. This creative space made of mosaic tile, found items, and rebar is like no place on earth. Climb through airplanes and fire engines while suspended in tunnels over the city. Kids can make free art or enjoy a magic show and everyone can slide down old shoe chutes in this former shoe factory. The Cabin Inn (http://www.cabin-inn.com/) bar at the City Museum is open until 1 am.

St. Louis is a high crime city. Please, do not be careless. Walk in groups at night, and be careful if you are drunk.

Where to Eat in St Louis
St Louis restaurant world is broad, vast, and can be mediocre if you don't know where to go.
Lunch:
Blue City Deli- The best sandwich, po' boy, and mufuletta in town. Located in Benton Park, 10 minutes or so from downtown. A great place to grab a quick bite. Not the best for a sit down lunch but great if you want something on the go as the seating is somewhat limited. On Saturdays sometimes there is free blues. www.bluecitydeli.com
Pappy's Smoke House-
In my opinion the best BBQ in St Louis( in a safe neighborhood and regular consistant hours). A good place to get St Louis Style ribs. This place has counter service and is nothing fancy. http://www.pappyssmokehouse.com/bbq.php
